The Asplund Stockholm City Library requested a design for a complex program that would develop over time. The Library requested this approach in recognition that society continues to move from printed media to more digital on-line media and that libraries need to evolve accordingly. Similarly, libraries compete with book stores and now frequently often cafes, music, lounges and reading areas. The challenge of this project was to maintain a set program among the different departments, yet design building flexibility to provide for changing needs over a long period of time.
We engaged in an analysis to create potential for program fluidity in a fixed building design. To do so, we developed a parametric computer program that allowed us to investigate program and design options based on a push and pull program change. Once we developed the most flexible solution we looked at how we might enclose the program into an architectural form.
