Snohomish School District’s need to replace it's aging existing facility offered an opportunity to rethink what an aquatic & community center could be. Housing the disparate programmatic elements in a contextually friendly way proved to be a challenge. One of the original schemes explored the possibility of establishing two facilities, one family oriented and the other dedicated to competitive swimming and diving. In this scenario, the competitive swimming and diving facility would be located outside the town offering athletes and users an environment free of distractions. Located next to the picturesque Spada Lake, this expanded facility would have the ability to host statewide competitions. Core programmatic elements include a 50M competition-training pool, therapy pool and administration facilities. Ancillary functions such as locker rooms, showers, toilets, parking and servicing are integrated into the landscaped podium reducing the massing of visible structures.
